EXCURSION TO THE DANUBE BEND

The Danube Bend, with its variety of natural beauty, many historical monuments and the proximity of the capital is one of the country's most ideal areas for excursions, the most frequent route for daytrips from Budapest. The place was the scene of important events in the history of medieval Hungary. The most notable towns on the right bank are Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom.

The first pearl of the Danube Bend is Szentendre (St. Andrew). This colorful baroque town with its Mediterranean atmosphere, dozens of museums, seven church towers is about 20 kilometers north of Budapest, the home of several artists, antique shops, boutiques and art galleries.

The most popular museum in the country is the Margit Kovács Museum. The ceramicist artist's collection is really worth visiting. One of Szentendre's big attractions is the Open-Air Ethnographic Museum which reconstructs village architecture from several regions of Hungary and incomparably rich collection welcomes visitors.

Visegrád is a historical site, in Charles Robert's days it was the capital of Hungary. For nearly two centuries, medieval court life in Hungary was situated here. The Italian historical writer Antonio Bonfini marked one of his letters with words "from Visegrád, paradise on earth". He wrote about the palace of the great Renaissance ruler, King Matthias. The castle offers a spectacular view of the Danube Bend. It is worth visiting the Solomon Tower which is one of the oldest and the most intact Romanesque dwelling tower of Central Europe.

The 3rd stop on the banks of the Danube is Esztergom. St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king, the founder of the country was born in the castle built here in 972 and was crowned king here in 1001. Esztergom was the first royal seat in the 11th century and it is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Primate of Hungary, the Archbishop of Esztergom.

Hungary's largest church, the classic style Basilica, rises high on the Castle Hill as the defining feature of the town. The Treasure of the Cathedral displayed here incorporates the most valuable collection of Hungarian religious art. The excursion can be enhanced with an excellent organ concert in the Basilica for groups (ca 30 minutes).
