Kalocsa is a thousand-year-old archbishopric, and the second biggest centre of the Catholic Church in Hungary.
The first permanent exhibition in the Archbishop's Treasury opened in 1988 on the first floor of the Cathedral in the rooms of the chapter archive.
In 2002, during the millennium celebration of the founding of the diocese, the collection was moved into the house of István Katona who was a canon and historian.
Besides containing many ecclesiastical relics, this new, permanent exhibition also depicts the history of the Archbishops of Kalocsa.
The oldest piece in the collection dates from the first part of the 12th Century. It is a Procession Cross.
We can find pieces, which were discovered in the tomb of Archbishop Saul
Most of the goldsmith's works in the glass cases are gold, silver and gilt brass.
Beside service accessories (chalices, monstrances, thuribles, incense-boat, bookmarks, holy-water stoop, etc.) the exhibition contains the mantles, jewels and crosiers of Archbishops.
Saint Stephen's Herma is a special piece of the collection. It is made of gold and silver with rubies.
The Archbishop's Treasury is next to the Cathedral (2 minutes walk).
The program takes about 40 minutes.
We are looking forward to welcoming our guests!
